So how do you plan when you are not quite sure how the next month will play out? Well, you do your best. Here are a couple of things to consider:

FIRST COMMUNION. Last Sunday afternoon should have been first communion. It was a BEA-U-TIFUL day, perfect for that celebration. Unfortunately, our nasty little friend Covid 19 spoiled the party. Mrs. Govero and I have begun discussions as to options over the next couple of months. She is contacting some 2nd grade parents about these options and we will try to put together a tentative plan.
The one thing we know for certain is that ONE BIG HONKING celebration will probably not work. We have 60 first communicants, so cramming everyone into the church may not be wise. Hopefully in the course of the next two weeks, we will have a better idea about where we are headed. Ideally, I would like all of our students to have received their first communion by the end of July. That’s my goal.

PUBLIC MASSES. Someone left a leaflet on the door of church demanding communion. “If McDonalds can still sell Big Macs” it read, “…we could get communion.” To be honest, nothing would make me happier, only at this moment, it is not my call. I have allowed communion to be brought to some people who are terminal patients. Other than that, for everyone to have that available would be – at this
time – somewhat chaotic. If you feel otherwise, please let me know. Oh, and when you put something on a door of the church, sign it so that I have the opportunity to dialogue with you or pass on your concerns to the Archbishop, who has the ultimate say in these matters.

8th GRADE GRADUATION. Our eighth graders are a special group of students. Go to YouTube and watch the marvelous work of Kate Graf and Bella Kurtz. They deserve some sort of closure for their years here at HR. They deserve a send-off to the next stage of their lives in high school. I think I speak for Mrs. Galluzzo when I say we will have some sort of celebration for this amazing group.

RECONCILIATION. I am still hearing confessions at the regular time, only I am in the sacristy of church where a penitent can either go face-to-face or anonymously, all the while adhering to social distancing. I’ve had people call and set up appointments as well. Holy Redeemer is still open and I am available.

Above all, Hang in There, HR!!
